    Marriage, Partnership and Sexual Orientation: A Study of British University Academics and Administrators

    Using a unique data source on marital status, partnership and sexual orientation of academics and administrators at British universities, we estimate the impact of personal relationships upon earnings for men and women. While university data cover a relatively homogeneous group of workers, the two sides of the university are very different, with administrative jobs being more like the general job market in the economy. We find a large and significant married male premium, but only on the administrative side of the university. There is no female marriage premium, and no partnership return to gay men or to either heterosexual or homosexual women.sexual orientation, marriage, partnership, academic labour markets

    Outside Offers and the Gender Pay Gap: Empirical Evidence from the UK Academic Labour Market

    Using a unique data source on academic economists' labour market experiences, we explore gender, pay and promotions. In addition to earnings and productivity measures, we have information on outside offers and perceptions of discrimination. In contrast to the existing literature, we find both a gender promotions gap and a within-rank gender pay gap. A driving factor may be the role of outside offers: men receive more outside offers than women of comparable characteristics, and gain higher pay increases in response to outside offers. This may arise due to discrimination, and we find that perceptions of discrimination and also outside job applications correlate with an individual receiving earnings below that expected, given their characteristics.gender, promotions, earnings, discrimination

    Temporary Jobs: Stepping Stones or Dead Ends?

    In Britain about 7% of male employees and 10% of female employees are in temporary jobs. In contrast to much of continental Europe - with stricter employment protection provisions - this proportion has been relatively stable over the 1990s. Using data from the British Household Panel Survey, and informed by relevant theory relating to probation, sorting and human capital investment, we find that temporary workers report lower levels of job satisfaction, receive less work-related training, and are less well-paid than their counterparts in permanent employment. However, there is some evidence that fixed-term contracts are a stepping stone to permanent work. Women (but not men) who start in fixed-term employment and move to permanent jobs fully catch up to those who start in permanent jobs.temporary jobs, fixed term contracts, individual unobserved heterogeneity, job-specific effects.

    The focal plane instrumentation for the DUNE mission

    DUNE (Dark Universe Explorer) is a proposed mission to measure parameters of dark energy using weak gravitational lensing The particular challenges of both optical and infrared focal planes and the DUNE baseline solution is discussed. The DUNE visible Focal Plane Array (VFP) consists of 36 large format red-sensitive CCDs, arranged in a 9x4 array together with the associated mechanical support structure and electronics processing chains. Four additional CCDs dedicated to attitude control measurements are located at the edge of the array. All CCDs are 4096 pixel red-enhanced e2v CCD203-82 devices with square 12 μ\mum pixels, operating from 550-920nm. Combining four rows of CCDs provides a total exposure time of 1500s. The VFP will be used in a closed-loop system by the spacecraft, which operates in a drift scan mode, in order to synchronize the scan and readout rates. The Near Infrared (NIR) FPA consists of a 5 x 12 mosaic of 60 Hawaii 2RG detector arrays from Teledyne, NIR bandpass filters for the wavelength bands Y, J, and H, the mechanical support structure, and the detector readout and signal processing electronics. The FPA is operated at a maximum temperature of 140 K for low dark current of 0.02e−-/s. Each sensor chip assembly has 2048 x 2048 square pixels of 18 μ\mum size (0.15 arcsec), sensitive in the 0.8 to 1.7 μ\mum wavelength range. As the spacecraft is scanning the sky, the image motion on the NIR FPA is stabilized by a de-scanning mirror during the integration time of 300 s per detector. The total integration time of 1500 seconds is split among the three NIR wavelengths bands.     Evaluation of Extratropical Cyclone Precipitation in the North Atlantic Basin: An analysis of ERA-Interim, WRF, and two CMIP5 models

    The representation of extratropical cyclones (ETCs) precipitation in general circulation models (GCMs) and a weather research and forecasting (WRF) model is analyzed. This work considers the link between ETC precipitation and dynamical strength and tests if parameterized convection affects this link for ETCs in the North Atlantic Basin. Lagrangian cyclone tracks of ETCs in ERA-Interim reanalysis (ERAI), the GISS and GFDL CMIP5 models, and WRF with two horizontal resolutions are utilized in a compositing analysis. The 20-km resolution WRF model generates stronger ETCs based on surface wind speed and cyclone precipitation. The GCMs and ERAI generate similar composite means and distributions for cyclone precipitation rates, but GCMs generate weaker cyclone surface winds than ERAI. The amount of cyclone precipitation generated by the convection scheme differs significantly across the datasets, with GISS generating the most, followed by ERAI and then GFDL. The models and reanalysis generate relatively more parameterized convective precipitation when the total cyclone-averaged precipitation is smaller. This is partially due to the contribution of parameterized convective precipitation occurring more often late in the ETC life cycle. For reanalysis and models, precipitation increases with both cyclone moisture and surface wind speed, and this is true if the contribution from the parameterized convection scheme is larger or not. This work shows that these different models generate similar total ETC precipitation despite large differences in the parameterized convection, and these differences do not cause unexpected behavior in ETC precipitation sensitivity to cyclone moisture or surface wind speed

    Deprojecting and constraining the vertical thickness of exoKuiper belts

    Constraining the vertical and radial structure of debris discs is crucial to understanding their formation, evolution and dynamics. To measure both the radial and vertical structure, a disc must be sufficiently inclined. However, if a disc is too close to edge-on, deprojecting its emission becomes non-trivial. In this paper we show how Frankenstein, a non-parametric tool to extract the radial brightness profile of circumstellar discs, can be used to deproject their emission at any inclination as long as they are optically thin and axisymmetric. Furthermore, we extend Frankenstein to account for the vertical thickness of an optically thin disc (H(r)H(r)) and show how it can be constrained by sampling its posterior probability distribution and assuming a functional form (e.g. constant h=H/rh=H/r), while fitting the radial profile non-parametrically. We use this new method to determine the radial and vertical structure of 16 highly inclined debris discs observed by ALMA. We find a wide range of vertical aspect ratios, hh, ranging from 0.020Âą0.0020.020\pm0.002 (AU Mic) to 0.20Âą0.030.20\pm0.03 (HD 110058), which are consistent with parametric models. We find a tentative correlation between hh and the disc fractional width, as expected if wide discs were more stirred. Assuming discs are self-stirred, the thinnest discs would require the presence of at least 500 km-sized planetesimals. The thickest discs would likely require the presence of planets. We also recover previously inferred and new radial structures, including a potential gap in the radial distribution of HD 61005. Finally, our new extension of Frankenstein also allows constraining how hh varies as a function of radius, which we test on 49 Ceti, finding that hh is consistent with being constant.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 17 pages. 16 figure

    Improving Outcomes in Adults with Diabetes Through an Interprofessional Collaborative Practice Program

    In 2014, the Midwest Interprofessional Practice, Education and Research Center partnered with a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) to implement an interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) education program to improve the health of adult patients with diabetes and to improve practice efficiency. This partnership included integrating an interprofessional team of students with the practice team. Twenty-five students and 20 staff engaged in the IPCP program, which included completion of educational modules on IPCP and implementation of daily huddles, focus patient visits, phone calls, team-based case presentations, medication reconciliation, and student-led group diabetes education classes. This study used a sequential mixed methods design. Tools used for collecting data from staff and students included demographic forms, the Interdisciplinary Education Perception Scale (IEPS), the Entry-level Interprofessional Questionnaire, the Collaborative Practice Assessment Tool, and pre/post module knowledge tests completed at baseline and at one-year post implementation. Patient clinical indicators included HgbA1c, glucose, lipid panel laboratory assessments, body mass index, blood pressure, and documentation of annual dental, foot, and eye examinations. Practice efficiency was measured by the average number of patients seen per provider per hour. Both students and staff showed significant knowledge gains in IPCP on Team Dynamics and Tips for Behavioural Changes knowledge tests (p \u3c .05). Patients who had an HgbA1c of ≥ 7% significantly decreased their HgbA1c (p \u3c .05) and glucose (p \u3c .01). However, BMI and annual dental and eye examinations did not improve. Providers demonstrated an increase in the number of patients seen per hour. This IPCP intervention showed improvement in practice efficiencies and select patient outcomes in a family practice clinic

    Exploring Talenting: Talent Management as a Collective Endeavour

    • Purpose We seek to show appreciation for the collective endeavour of work practices based on varying degrees of dependence, interdependence and mutuality between at least two people. Such dependencies have to be concerned with how talent is used and how this use is an interaction between people, a process we will call talenting. The aim of this paper is to provide a method to explore talenting. • Design/methodology/approach The paper will begin with a brief overview of recent debates relating to Talent Management and Development (TD). We argue that TMD seldom pays attention to work practices where performance is frequently a collective endeavour. We provide a case to explore talenting in West Yorkshire Police. A mapping method is explain to identify work practices and obtain narrative data. • Findings 12 examples are found and three are presented showing various forms of dependency to achieve outcomes. • Research limitations/implications TMD needs to move beyond employment practices to work practices. There is a need to close the gap between traditional TMD employment practices, usually individually focused, and work practices which are most likely to require a collective endeavour. • Practical implications There needs be ongoing appreciation of talenting to add to TMD activities. • Social implications We recognise a more inclusive approach to TMD • Originality/value Probably the first enquiry of its kind.     Relationship between homocysteine and cardiorespiratory fitness is sex-dependent

    Abstract Elevated plasma homocysteine is recognized as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Recently, there have been conflicting reports of the relationship between physical activity and homocysteine. A more objective measure of physical activity is cardiorespiratory fitness; however, its relationship with homocysteine has yet to be investigated. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness and plasma homocysteine. Cross-sectional associations between cardiorespiratory fitness (VO 2 max) and plasma homocysteine were examined in 49 men and 11 women. A submaximal bicycle test was used to determine VO 2 max and plasma homocysteine was measured using high performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. Dietary analysis determined B vitamin intake. There was a significant inverse relationship between plasma homocysteine concentration and VO 2 max in women (r Ď­ ĎŞ0.81, P Ď­ 0.003) but not in men (r Ď­ ĎŞ0.09, P Ď­ 0.95). There were no significant relationships between plasma homocysteine and age, BMI, body fat, total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol. In summary, elevated cardiorespiratory fitness is associated with decreased plasma homocysteine concentrations in women

    Starshade Rendezvous Probe

    The Starshade Rendezvous Probe Mission (https://smd-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/science-red/s3fs-public/atoms/files/Starshade2.pdf ) [1] will be the first space-based, high-contrast imaging mission with the potential to detect and characterize Earth-like planets in the habitable zone (HZ) around sunlike stars while at the same time exploring entire planetary systems about our nearest neighbors. Over the last two decades, astronomers have discovered and cataloged thousands of planets around other stars. Nevertheless, we have yet to find a planetary system like our own or to characterize discovered small planets to determine if they are similar to Earth. The next step in exploration is to image full planetary systems, including their HZs, and to obtain planetary spectra with enough sensitivity to determine if a planet is Earth-like. A space-based direct imaging mission to ultimately find and characterize other Earth-like planets is a long-term priority for space astrophysics [2, 3]
